While looking through the old membership books will give you the names of the people who possessed the number, that does not equate to ownership of that trailer. Yes one of the people who have had the number owned that trailer, however many people may have had that number over the years. The best way to trace the past owners is to do a title trace through the BMV. I just looked up the number in the 2010 directory, it is currently in use. I have a similiar situation. I chose to join, adding a digit, so now my trailer sports 13497 instead of the original 3497.

Scott,
Your reply is technically correct, but I believe that most states (BMV = Bureau of Motor Vehicles?) no longer allow previous owner history to be shared with the public. It used to be you could purchase a report for a few $$$, but now the right to privacy precludes this in many if not all cases. If a trailer has a number that would have been assigned it's year of manufacture, I expect the Membership Directory information is probably correct in most cases (no guarantees, though). Subsequent people to be assigned that number after the trailer year of manufacture may or may not have owned that trailer, especially is from a different geographic region of the country than the first person to have been assigned that number, so that information is provided more for curiosity than anything. |
